Angela

Dr. Angela Nyambura Gichaga

Chief Executive Officer, Financing Alliance for Health

Dr. Angela Gichaga, a clinician, health economist, and recent management consultant with McKinsey & Company,  has joined the Financing Alliance as Chief Executive Officer, effective June 2017. Angela, in coordination with the Financing Alliance's Project Advisory Committee and fiscal sponsor Capital for Good USA, is responsible for strategic development and fundraising, initiative development, stakeholder engagement, recruiting and team development, and management.

She is a public and social sector enthusiast with experience working across civil service, management consulting, NGOs and academia, to improve the quality of peoples’ lives through gender advocacy, leadership training, coaching, mentorship health and education.

Dr. Gichaga completed her undergraduate degree in Medicine, Masters in Health Economics and Policy and Fellowship in Public Sector Management and has served as a frontline clinician, policy maker, and consultant. She served the MOH Kenya as a District Medical Officer of Health (DMOH) and a hospital in charge (MEDSUP) in both Meru and Garbatulla, for ~150 multi-disciplinary team members through coordinating strategic planning, resource mobilization, recruitment, monitoring and capacity building through on job training/ mentorship. She then joined the MOH HQ, where she co-developed national strategies and prepared reports on the country’s health achievements. 

She was humbled to receive the Australian Leadership Awards for Africa (2012) and the President Obama’s Mandela Washington Fellowship (2014) in recognition of her exemplary leadership within the civil service and operational track record of excellence in achieving results.

Most recently, Dr. Gichaga worked at McKinsey & Company’s Africa Delivery Hub (ADH) working across multiple sectors, especially on socio-economic and development issues in Africa.

NAN CHEN

Senior Officer, Policy and Public Partnerships at Last Mile Health

Nan Chen works with Last Mile Health as their Senior Officer, Policy & Public Partnerships. In this role, he supports the government of Liberia’s efforts to design, launch, and scale a national community health program. Specifically, Nan advises the government on its community health financing needs including demand forecasting, costing analyses, investment case drafting, and resource mobilization. Nan also supports LMH’s government engagement team in policy development and coalition building for the national program. Nan also supports Last Mile Health’s efforts to develop working relationships amongst like-minded partners in community health, health finance, and primary health care.

Prior to Last Mile Health, Nan worked with the Millennium Challenge Corporation on private public partnerships, policy analysis, and market-based health interventions.

Additionally, Nan worked with Open Capital Advisors in Kenya advising SME and impact investors on pathways to scale for social enterprises. Nan has also advised NGOs and social enterprises through the Harvard Law and International Development Society and Aspen Network for Development Entrepreneurs. Nan has an MPP from the Harvard Kennedy School, JD from Northwestern University, and BA from University of Chicago.

PHYLLIS HEYDT

Vice President, Frontline Delivery, Office of the UN Special Envoy for Health in Agenda 2030 and for Malaria (UNSEO)

Phyllis Heydt focuses on Community Health Workers (CHWs) and frontline delivery systems for the Office of the U.N. S­pecial Envoy and the Global Health Alliance. Phyllis has co-led the ‘Backpack PLUS’ project, which seeks to create new attention around CHWs and develop innovative tools and approaches.

Phyllis previously worked in the Strategy Team at the Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria, and before that was an Engagement Manager in McKinsey’s healthcare practice in Germany and London. Phyllis holds a Masters of Economics and Business from the University of St.Gallen in Switzerland, and a Masters in International Health Policy and Health Economics from the London School of Economics.

Phyllis is passionate not only about health care in developing countries, but also about innovative models to improve the quality and performance of health systems across the globe. She co-founded and partially owns “discovering hands”, an award-winning social healthcare enterprise in Germany (www.discovering-hands.de)

Daniel Palazuelos

Senior Health and Policy Advisor for Community Health Systems, Partners in Health

Daniel Palazuelos, MD, MPH is a global health implementer-educator who holds positions at Harvard Medical School (HMS) the Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) and Partners In Health (PIH). He started his career by living and working with community health workers (CHWs) in impoverished communities in Chiapas, Mexico, and these grassroots experiences have deeply influenced his approach to addressing the biggest challenges in global health.

Now as a clinician-educator in the US, a strategist for the PIH project in Mexico, a mentor at HMS, a residency assistant program director at BWH, and a senior health and policy adviser in community health systems at PIH, he offers these insight whenever possible to assure that our finest clinicians are trained to understand the community perspective, and our exemplar health systems are aligned to the real needs of people living in the poorest and most difficult circumstances.

JEROME PFAFFMAN Zambruni

Health Specialist, Child Health Unit, UNICEF

Jerome Pfaffman is a health specialist at UNICEF headquarters in New York and is responsible for all community health matters. Prior to this position, he held leadership roles at UNICEF’s West Africa regional office and at UNICEF Nigeria. He is the author of extensive works on community health and on integrated Community Case Management (iCCM).

Prior to his work at UNICEF, Jerome was a Project Manager at the Intercaribbean Partnership for Maternal and Child Health and a Medical Coordinator, Doctors of the World UK and France. Jerome holds an MsC from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).

interim project director: claire qureshi

Vice President, Frontline Delivery, Office of the UN Special Envoy for Health in Agenda 2030 and for Malaria (UNSEO)

Claire Qureshi co-leads efforts on community health and frontline delivery for the Office of the UN Special Envoy, with an emphasis on supporting countries in sub-Saharan Africa to sustainably finance their community health programs. In this capacity, she engages closely with ministries of health, official donors, private investors, NGOs, and multilateral partners. Claire also serves as a key advisor on an effort to expand community health in the U.S., in part by drawing on global lessons.

In addition to her work in global and domestic healthcare, Claire also served in the Office of the Chief of Staff at the U.S. Treasury Department, covering international affairs, terrorism and financial intelligence, and tax policy for Secretary Geithner. While in graduate school, Claire was a White House Intern and worked with the Office of the Chief of Staff and the National Economic Council. Claire received her MBA from Harvard Business School and her B.A. from Yale University. She lives in New Haven, Connecticut, with her husband and son.

John Simon

Founding Partner, Total Impact Capital

Prior to starting TOTAL (formerly known as Total Impact Advisors), Ambassador Simon was a visiting fellow at the Center for Global Development, where he co-authored More than Money, a report on impact investing as a development tool.

Previously, he held a variety of posts in the US federal government, including serving most recently as the United States Ambassador to the African Union and the Executive Vice President of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC). At OPIC, Ambassador Simon championed the Agency’s involvement in the social impact investment marketplace, spearheading efforts to finance housing in Africa, small and medium businesses in Liberia, and a large scale renewable power plant in Liberia. Ambassador Simon led the Agency’s effort to develop a series of social development funds for Africa, which resulted in the creation of four private equity funds focused on achieving extraordinary social results as well as strong financial performance.

Ambassador Simon also served as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Relief, Stabilization, and Development for the National Security Council (NSC) at the White House, the first to hold this post. During his tenure at the NSC, Ambassador Simon oversaw the implementation of groundbreaking development initiatives, including the Millennium Challenge Account, the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, the Multilateral Debt Relief Initiative, and the President's Malaria Initiative. He was also responsible for the U.S. government response to international humanitarian disasters, such as the 2005 South Asia Earthquake.

From 2002 to 2003, Ambassador Simon was Deputy Assistant Administrator at the United States Agency for International Development, overseeing the agency’s development information and evaluation units. Earlier in his career, he served as Director of Business Finance and Strategic Planning at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and worked for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ Executive Office for Administration and Finance in several capacities, including Deputy Director for Research and Development.
